Effect of Sulphur on Solidification Cracking in Weld Metal of Steel (Report 6) : Weld Solidification Crack Susceptibility of High Tensile Low Nickel Alloy Steel

Effects of sulphur, nickel, carbon, manganese and phosphorus on weld solidification crack of commercial and tentative high tensile low nickel alloy steels (50-100 kg/mm^2 class) are investigated using Varestraint testing. As regards manganese and sulphur, the general law derived in the previous paper which gives the manganese content required to sufficiently lower the crack susceptibility for a given sulphur content is experimentally examined. As the result, the detrimental effects of sulphur, nickel, carbon and phosphorus are reconfirmed. Further it is revealed that an additional increase in manganese content sufficiently lowers the crack susceptibility induced by sulphur even in the presence of nickel and/or carbon, and that the required manganese content well agrees with the theoretically derived value.
