For the purpose of fundamental study on the effect of sulphur on solidification cracking, the shape and the distribution of sulphides in TIG-arc weld metals of Fe-S binary alloys have been investigated, in which the sulphur was purposefully added in a much higher amount than that encountered in commercial steel to make the observation of sulphides easy. Moreover, the difference in shape of sulphide between columnar grain boundaries and cell (or cellular dendrite) boundaries has been discussed from the viewpoint of grain boundary energy.
