The growth mode of the subgrains and the preferred orientation have been investigated with the weld metal of high purity aluminum sheets. The columnar crystals grow approximately parallel to the direction of the maximum temperature gradient as inward growth proceeds. The subgrains observed in the columnar crystals have no easy growth direction and also grow parallel to the direction of the maximum temperature gradient. Moreover, a competitive growth was observed near the center in the weld metal.
