In the weld metal of aluminum alloy a special structure called the feathery crystal is frequently developed besides the columnar crystal and the equiaxed dendrite. Investigations have been made on some metallurgical and mechanical behaviors of the feathery crystal which is developed GTA weld metal of 5083 aluminum alloy sheets. The feathery crystal is easily developed at the welding speed under 500mm/min and in the intermediate range of the weld heat input between the value at which the columnar crystal is developed and the value at which the equiaxed dendrite is developed. The feathery crystal developed in the weld metal is a growth twin and grows in the shape of an unfolded fan with a large radius of curvature. This is due to the phenomenon that each twin plane, microscopically, grows intermittently with a small inclination angle to each other. When the feathery crystal is developed the elongation of the welded joint decreases considerably.
