Growth Features of Subgrains and Columnar Crystals in Aluminum Weld Metal

Examinations have been made on the growth features of the subgrains developed in weld metals of 99.93%-aluminum and 1050 commercially pure aluminum single crystal sheets by using optical microscope and X-ray diffraction techniques. The subgrains, in general, grew in the direction of <100>. In 99.93%-aluminum the solidification mode was cellular when <100> in the growing crystal was approximately parallel to the direction of thermal flow. On the other hand, the cellular dendrite was observed when the angle between <100> and the direction of thermal flow was large enough. Besides, the mechanism of the competitive growth of columnar crystals which was observed near the fusion boundary of the weld metal has been explained in terms of the growth features of subgrains.
