Weld Metal Cracking and Improvements of 25%Cr-20%Ni (AISI 310S) Fully Austenitic Stainless Steel

Fully austenitic stainless steel weld metals are highly susceptible to solidification cracking when welding rods, wires, or electrodes producingσ-ferrite are not employed. Therefore, with the primary objective of producing crack-resistant fully austenitic weld metals, this investigation was undertaken on fully austenitic and partially ferritic weld metals by performing the Trans-Varestraint test, etc., to determine the basic causes and the mechanisms of cracking, and then to define the effects of decreased P and S and added alloying elements on cracking susceptibility. The results were interpreted in terms of the behaviors of phosphides and sulphides. The main results are : (1) One of the most reliable explanations why duplex AISI 304, etc., are resistant to solidlfication cracking is in the solidification process during which low freezing point liquids are confined in austenite grains growing at solidification grain boundaries accompanied with the formation of migrated grain boundaries along δ: γ boundaries due to the transformation of δ-ferrite into austenite in addition to the reduced microsegregation of P and S due to primary δ-ferrite. (2) A decrease in especially P and S greatly improves the cracking resistance of AISI 310S. For P+S content of less than 0.01 % AISI 310S produces weld metals which would exhibit excellent cracking resistance in practical use as well as a narrow solidification brittleness temperature range (BTR) of about 110゜C or less. (3) The optimum content of La or REM (mish-metal) added to commercially available AISI 310S at present can also improve the cracking resistance to such a desired extent that sound weldments in fully austenitic microstructure may be readily made.
