X-ray Investigations on Solidification Structures in Weld Metal

Bead-on-plate welding was performed on thin sheets of commercially pure niobium and aluminum with TIG arc and an electron beam. Investigations were made on the welding solidification modes mainly with the aid of X-ray diffraction technique. As the result of the investigation, it was made clear that the weld metal grows epitaxially on each crystal grain in the base metal and that the dendrites developed in the weld craters of niobium metal grow in the direction of <100>. Moreover, cellular subgrains which were observed in the weld metal of aluminum tend to grow in fhe direction of <100> and the mean width of cellular subgrains and the misorientations between them decrease as the grbth rate increases.
