Contribution of Higher Harmonic Resonance on the Production of ECR Mirror Plasma by 60 GHz Gyrotron

In ECR plasma production in a simple mirror field using a high-power 60 GHz gyrotron, the contribution of higher harmonic resonance is studied experimentally by an energy-dispersive measurement of the radial distribution of soft X-ray emissions with a gas flow-type proportional counter. Existence of the fundamental resonance zone within the vacuum chamber was confirmed to be necessary for the efficient ignition of the plasma. A remarkable difference in the warm and/or hot electron distribution was found in the radial and axial launches of the wave at a low power input under the same magnetic field configuration.
