Experimental Investigation of Coaxial Microwave Plasmatron in Nitrogen Gas

A coaxial type microwave plasmatron is experimentally investigated. Under the axial flow of the nitrogen gas some systematic characteristics of the plasmatron are obtained by electrical and spectroscopic measurements. At a power level of about 2 kW the dimensions of the plasma flame are 10 cm in length and 0.5 cm in diameter in the axial flow of 56 1/min. The plasma attains a temperature of about 6700 K and a density of 7×10^<13>cm^<-3> near the hottest part in space. A remarkable nonuniformity of the plasma conductivity is observed. A large gas flow rate (30≤φ≤200 1/min) strongly affects the radial dimension of the plasma. The measurement of the plasma impedance is in qualitative agreement with the rod model of the plasma. Some theoretical considerations are made on the energy balance problem and the comparison with the experimental result shows a fair agreement.
