LYVE-1 (lymphatic vessel endothelial HA receptor 1) was recently identified as a novel hyaluronan receptor localized in lymphatic vessels in various tissues. However, the cellular and subcellular distribution of LYVE-1 has not been fully clarified. The present study thus aimed to demonstrate precisely the expression of LYVE-1 in the human small intestine by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Significant signals for LYVE-1 mRNA were found in the endothelium of lymphatic vessels, which were identified by'-nucleotidase (5'- Nase) staining previously developed, in all layers of the intestinal wall. LYVE-1 was immunolocalized on both the luminal and abluminal menbranes of lymphatic endothelial cells corresponded to 5'-Nase- positive cells. The localization of signals for the LYVE-1 mRNA was recognizable in LYVE-1-immunoreactive lymphatic endothelial cells. These findings indicate a useful marker of LYVE- 1 for studies of the transport of tissue fluid and cellular elements via lymphatic vessels.
