Flow in the tower fermentor with a two-fluid nozzle was expressed by the back-flow nodel with liquid circulation. With the assumption of such operating conditions as are used in continuous culture, the response in the concentration change of a tracer with respect to time after the tracer was introduced was simulated by a δ-function. The flow characteristics of the tower fermentor with the two-fluid nozzle responded as those of a CSTR (continuous stirred tank reactor) at flow rates of liquid circulation above 500 l/hr, which corresponded to a mean residence time of 0.18 hr for the total volume in the tower.
