The metabolic pathway of benzoate in Brevibacterium sp. No.6,a typical glutamate producer, was studied. The benzoate-grown cells showed strong oxidation activity for benzoate and catechol, and weak activity for m- and p-hydroxybenzoate, protocatechuate, and gentisate. It was thus estimated that benzoate was metabolized first to catechol. cis, cis-Muconate and β-ketoadipate were confirmed as the products from catechol in the reaction with a cell-free extract of the benzoate-grown cells. Equimolar conversion of catechol to β-ketoadipate was shown by stoichiometric analyses. The metabolic pathway inferred is : Benzoate→Catechol→cis, cis-Muconate→β-Ketoadipate.
