Candicin, a new sphingoglycolipid, was isolated from cells of Candida rugosa JF101 grown on n-hexadecane, and its structure was detemined to be 1-β-galactopyransyl-2-(α-hexadecanoly)-2-amino-1,3-dihydroxy-trans-4,cis-12-nonadecadiene by spectral and chemical analysis. The candicin content (145 μg/100 mg cell) of n-hexadecane-grown cells was sixfold greater than that of glucose-grown cells. Candicin was also found in other hydrocarbon-assimilating yeasts.
