A hydrocarbon-utilizing strain of Mucor sp., no. 285-2,was grown on a C11〜16 n-alkanes or glucose as sole carbon and energy source. The strain grew more rapidly on shorter chain n-alkanes (C11〜13). The predominant cellular fatty acids in the cells grown on n-C11〜13 were C16 : 0 (10〜29%), C18 : 1 (17〜30%), and C20 : 0 (19〜32%) acids, while those in the n-C14〜16 cultures were respectively the acid having the same chain length as substrate.Cellular non-polar lipids were composed of sterols, sterol esters, diflycerides, trigly-cerides, and free fatty acids. The major lipids formed were free fatty acids and triglycerides with all substrates. The composition of free fatty acdis was similar to that of cellular lipid. However, C13 : 0 acid tended to be incorporated into triglycerides in n-C13 culture. The quality of cellular non-polar lipids was clearly influenced by the n-alkanes used as substrate.
