The microbial transformation of a sesquiterpene lactone, (-)-α-santonin, was carried out by using Streptomyces aureofaciens KCC-S-0624. The extract of cultured broth with ethyl acetate was purified on a silica gel column developed with 1% acetone-benzene. A crystalline product (m.p. 154.5-155.5℃) was obtained which was identified as lumisantonin by UV, IR mass and proton NMR spectroanalyses.
