Correlation Effects on the Spin Soliton in Polyacetylene

Effects of electron correlations are studied in trans-polyacetylene up to the secondorder with respect to the fluctuations around the Hartree-Fock solution. We presentresults for a spin soliton, which has a negative spin density dtue to correlations. It isfound that the second-order corrections suppress the dependences of the creationenergy, the position of the midgap level and the spin density profile on correlations inthe Hartree-Fock approximatioru, and that the suppression is large when the spin den-sity alternation around the soliton is large. Comparing the present results with recentENDOR experiments, we find that the observed spin density profile can be repro-duced if we take the dimensionaless electron-lattice coupling strength 2=0.l, the onsite Coulomb energy U= l.6Z. and the nearest-neighbor interaction V=O.8t., with t.as the nearest-neighbor hopping integral.[correIation, spin soliton, polyacetylene, fluctuation, perturbation theory, ll negative spin density, ENDORll
