The effect of metal alternation (PI and M) in linear-chain halogen-bridged mixed-valence complexes, [M(en).][PtX.(en).1(CIO.)., (X=Cl, Br and I; M=Pt, Pd and Ni;en=ethylenediamine), has been investigated using polarized reflection measurements.The electronic absorption spectra of these materials, obtained by applying theKramers-Kronig relation to the reflectivity data, show two distinctive charge-transferexciton bands associated with the infer-metal transitions, "M-Pt", and the transi-Lions from halogen ions to metal ions, "X-Pt". On substitution of M=Pt by Pd orNi, the absorption intensity of the "X-Pt" excitona was enhanced in contrast to thereduction of the "M-Pt" exciton intensity. The intensity borrowing between thesetwo excitons is consistent with a numerical calculation based out a trimer model of theCT exciton transitions.[optical properties, halogen-bridged mixed-valence complexes, charge transfer, ll exciton, reflectivity, metal substitution, Kramers-Kronig transformation {
