Hall Current Distributions in Quantum Hall Effect on Finite Cylinder Surface. II. Gate Barrier Effect

The equilibrium and non-eqt.nilibrium current distributions are investigated in thequantum Hall regime by using the finite cylinder model with a gate barrier potential atthe middle of the system. The energy for the edge states of the vth Landau subband,lA.;c.(2) -(n-EX/2)hco., c.(2) being the eigenenccrgy of the edge states under thegeneralized periodic boundary condition for the wave f'?tnction P(x,y-f-L,)e "P(x, y), is introduced to characterize the beh;tvior of edge states. When AE. ismuch smaller than the gate barrier potential U., the edge states are completelyreflected, while they are transparent when A E, is larger than U.. When A E, s U., wehave states which have significa?tt amplitude both in the bulk region of the gate potential and in the edge region otutside the gate potential. These irrtermediate states areshown to contribute to the bulk flow of the quanturn Hall current which satisfies ap-proximately the local compensation.
