Magnetooptical Determination of the Exchange Field on the Excited Magnetic Ions under a High Magnetic Field

A new method for the determination of the exchange field between the ground andoptically excited states in antiferromagnetic crystals is proposed. The exchange field isevaluated from the field-depenadent spectral shift which comes from the difference inthe effective parameters between the ground and excited state spins. A practical ap-plication of the method is done in YbCr0, and the various exchange parameters aredetermined. For example, the intersublattice exchange field between the ground andexcited Cr" spins is estimated to be 55% of the ground state value.
