Zeeman Effect of R-lines in Ruby under a High Magnetic Field

The Zeeman effect of R-absorption lines in ruby was observed in a high pulsedmagnetic field up to 520 k0e using an optical multichannel analyzer. The experi-ment was done under a thermal equilibrium condition (7'=[30 K) and theZeeman line intensity is satisfactorily explained. When a magnetic field is appliedperpendicular to the C.-axis, the excited E and 2A states show a level mixingand the observed pattern indicates a clear Paschen-Back effect The observedyzz-values of the excited states xre -2.49]0.05 and 1.49f0.05 for E and 2A,respectively. .(.-values for these levels were estimated to be smaller than 0.1 at500 k0e.
