X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Fluorophenyl Retinal and Its Bacteriorhodopsin Analogue

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been first applied to the fluoro-phenyl retinal and its bacteriorhodopsin analogue in order to study the chemicalenvironments of chromophore in the bacteriorhodopsin. The experimental resultssuggest that there is no external point charge near the /7-ionone ring of the retinalmolecule in the bacteriorhodopsin.
