Angle-resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectra have been measured for Ge(111) surfaces at temperatures from ambient T to 730℃. It is found that no essential changes in surface electronic structure occur in going from the "2×8" surface to the "1×1" surface, indicating a similarity in local surface geometries of the two. It is also found that an unoccupied surface state, as was found previously with electron energy loss spectroscopy, reveals its existence at 200℃≤T≤400℃. Angular dependence of photoelectron intensity of the unoccupied surface state is similar to that of the metallic surface state of the Si(111) 7×7 surface.
