Momentum-resolved inverse photoemission spectra have been measured for Sill 1 1)=7 3 x 8 -Sn and -In surfaces. An empty part of the metallic surface-state band for5 X J -Sn is observed. It is noted that the metallic band (including the empty andfilled parts) for the 8 X =I3 -Sn surface disperses in the same manner as the emptyband for the R % A -In surface. This is consistent with the jcrevious proposal thatthe atomic arrangements of the A X A -Sn and J3 X vl-column III surfaces areidentical to each other. For the Sill 11)2 8 X 2! 3 -Sn surface, momentum-resolvedinverse photoemission spectra and coverage-depenclent angle-resolved photoernissionspectra have been measured. It has been found that the 2J3 X2d-Sn surface issemiconducting and at least two filled- and one empty-surface-state bands exist in thebulk band gap.
