Metamagnetic Phase Transitions in FeTiO_3

Magnetic susceptibilities and magnetization isotherms have been measuredfor single crystal Fetid.. The susceptibility parallcl to the c-axis has a large andsharp peak at 7'?=58.0i0.3 K, while the perpendicular susceptibility is almostindependent of temperattu"e below T.. Magnetization isotherm at 4.2 K with fieldsapplied along the c-axis exhibits a typical metamagnetic transition at ff.=80.3.f0.1 k0e, being the first observation of metamagnetism in 3d transition metaloxides. The transition is of the first order up to about 35 K, above which it is ofthe second order. The experimental data are well reproduced by molecular fieldcalculations with the best fit parameters of the amtisotropy field H.=150k0e,the ferromagnetic intrasublattice exchange interaction of 2z3J?=2S.5K, andthe antiferromagnetic intersublattice interaction of lz.J.= - 6.67 K.
