Polarized Neutron Diffraction Study of a CuCr_2Se_4 Single Crystal

The electronic state of CuCr.Se3 is investigated by means of the polarizedneutron diffraction technique. From the measured form factors of copper andchromium atoms, the magnetic moments are determined to be -0.07,10.02(p./Cu) and 2.64.1.0.04 (p./Cr), respectively. Further, the uniform polarizationexistent throughout the crystal is estimated to [>e -0.20{ 0.11 p. per formulaunit, using the total moment 5.01 .1:0.01 (pg/Cu(l'r.Se,0obtained from the mag-netization measurement. This result which differs from those reported by otherauthors with neutron diffraction, shows that neither of the ionic configurationmodels of Cu"[Cr"Cr"]Se,. and Cu"[Cr]"]Se.. gives a satisfactory explanationof CuCr.Se., although the former is closer to tlne experimental data. The formfactor of the chromium atom agrees well with the calculated free ion form factorfor Cr", but not for Cr", and this fact indicates that the unpaired electrondensity on the chromium atom is more spread than that for free Cr". It is foundthat 84 11 16Z of the unr>aired 3d electrons occur>z tzs orbita.Is.
