Magnetic Moment and Hyperfine Field in Colloidal Fine Particles of Iron

Magnetization and M6ssbauer spectroscopy measurements are reported for fineparticles of iron, 20 A in average diameter, dispersed in oil by a surface-active agent.The magnetic moment per atom was obtained from the saturation magnetization.The value at 4.2 K was 2.2Sp., which is larger than that in bulk iron. It was confirmedfrom the M6ssbauer spectroscopy that the particles are free from oxidation. Thehyperfine field H.. at 4.2 K was distributed in the range from 300 k0e to 400 kOe. Theaverage of H., was enhanced as compared with tlne bulk value correspondingly to theincrease in the magnetic moment.
