The F; -mode phonon interaction in the relaxed excited state (RES) of the F centerhas been investigated through a theoretical study of the Stark e1Tects on the RES, as anextension of the Kayanuma and Toyozawa theory. The general expressions of thetemperature dependence of both the Stark polarization PAT) and the radiative life timer(T) are derived. They include two parameters; 2s-2p electronic energy difference A, andF; -phonon coupling constant .5.. These parameters are detcrmined by theoreticalcurve-fitting of the experimental data of P(T) for potassium and rubidium halides. Theygive a consistent explanation of r(7) for KF, KCI, KBr, and label, and also give thevalues of the other important parameters of the RES. It is concluded that, in the RES,A >0 ; this implies that the 2s state lies either below the 2p states or degenerates withthem before introducing the electron-phonon coupling.
