Fluctuations in Nonequilibrium Steady States with Laminar Shear Flow : Classical Fluids near the Critical Point

We have studied critical phenomena in classical fluids in the presence of a uniform shear flow with a renormalization group method. The rate of shear which has the dimension of frequency can exceed the average decay rate of order parameter fluctuations which becomes small near the critical point. Then most order parameter fluctuations are distorted by the flow and have the shape of a cigar in the steady state. These elongated fluctuations are suppressed on the average below their equilibrium levels and the phase transition becomes of the mean field type.
