Vortex Motion and Mutual Friction in ^3He- ^4He Mixtures in the Critical and Tricritical Regions

The vortex motion is investigated under flow in ^3He-^4He mixture near the λ line and near the tricritical point. Hall and Vinen's mutual friction parameters B and B' are found to diverge as (T_λ-T)^<-1/3> at an intermediate molar concentration X=X_D (which is 0.37 at saturated vapor pressure) as in pure ^4He. For other concentration, however, they remain finite as T→T_λ. The λ line value of B behaves as X^<-1> for X≪1 and as (X-X_D)^<-2> for X ≌ X_D, whereas that of B' is 2. The point X=X_D on the λ line is a singular point recently found by the present author. In the tricritical region B goes to zero as the inverse correlation length x and B' is very close to 2. There, a large concentration deviation is induced around a moving vortex line, giving rise to an enhanced resistance against the vortex line. As a unique feature in the tricritical region the vortex velocity must be nearly equal to the normal fluid velocity if the flow is sufficiently slowly-varying in time.
