In order to evaluate the effects of surcharge load on secondary consolidation, a series of one dimensional consolidation tests in the laboratory has been performed on some kind of clays. Tests were performed on various combinations of surcharge load and its unloading time. With the view of predicting of settlement after surcharge unloading, a simple elasto-visco plastic model is proposed. The major conclusions obtained from this study, are as follows : (1) Coefficients of secondary consolidation C_<au> after surcharge unloading decrease with increasing consolidation pressure and overconsolidation ratio. Namely, the effects of a reduction of secondary consolidation is remakably influenced by the magnitude of surcharge load and the period of surcharge loading. (2) By using the proposed model, it is possible to predict the laboratory settlement time curve including the surcharge unloading.
