Undrained cyclic triaxial compression tests have been caried out on marine clays. Testing was performed on normally and overconsolidated specimens under various combinations of not only initial static and subsequent cyclic shear stress but also overconsolidation ratio. Additionally, monotonic compression and extension tests were also performed on the same clay under the same initial condition. At first, cyclic shear behaviours of normally and overconsolidated clay were investigated. Then the cyclic shear strength is related with the monotonic shear strength. As the results, it was recognized that the cyclic shear strength of anisotropically consolidated clays decreased with increasing initial static shear stress and it was not depended on the overconsolidation ratio. Furthermore, despite the difference in the initial static shear stresses and the overconsolidation ratio, a unique relationship was recognized between the cyclic shear stress normalized in monotonic shear strength and number of cycles.
