Consolidated undrained triaxial tests were performed on diatomaceous mudstones to investigate the residual strength characteristics of intact specimens (no joint) and precut specimens having a single joint with various inclinations. The following points may be emphasized : 1) Measurements of the strain softening behaviour show that the residual strength of intact specimens coincides with those of precut ones. And the post-peak drop in undrained shear strength of overconsolidated mudstones is greater than those in normally consolidated ones. 2) From test results performed by different rate of shear, it is concluded that the normally consolidated mudstones are dependent on time but peak and residual strength in overconsolidated mudstones are little affected by the rate of strain. 3) Comparisons of the rate of creep strain show that there is no difference between the intact specimens and the precut specimens.
