This paper is concerned with a new analysis for the penetration depth prediction of a rigid bar. The penetration mechanism is investigated by a series of labolatory experiments and finite element calculations. To describe the penetration behavior, it is assumed that the strain energy is calculated from the shearing deformation of soils near cone shaped head of the cylindrical bar and is subtracted from the kinetic energy of the penetrating bar until the bar stops at the completion of the energy transfer from the bar to the soil. It is shows that the penetration depth obtained from the laboratory experiments and calculated by the finite element method is influenced by the overburden pressure.
