Shear Strength Characteristics of Kanto Loam Subjected Repeated Loads

A series of undrained cyclic triaxial shear tests were performed on normally consolidated or overconsolidated Kanto loam samples. Additionally, monotonic triaxial compression tests were also performed on loam samples with the same initial test conditions. It will be shown that the cyclic undrained shear strength was defined by the same Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope obtained from the usual monotonic tests and the static shear strength of normally consolidated loam increases with the dissipation of excess pore water pressure induced by the repeated loads though the shear strength of overconsolidated loam is little affected by reconsolidation. The treatment and the interpretation of the shear strength of Kanto loam samples subjected to the repeated loads for the use in stability computations are disscussed.
