The limitation of conventional settlement analysis under three dimensional conditions is discussed in relation to the immediate settlement and the effective stress change occurring in actual soft grounds. According to the conventional analysis, the total settlement of a foundation on cohesive soils is composed of immediate settlement due to shearing deformations taking place at constant volume and consolidation settlement due to volume reduction. The validity of this approximate method of predicting two components in the total settlement is examined by anisotropic consolidation tests and numerical calculations. It is shown that the settlement occurred in three dimensional conditions is dependent on the effective stress path during anisotropic consolidation.
