Effect of Surfactants on Morphology of Niobate Hydrate Particles in Hydrothermal Synthesis

The effect of surfactants on the morphology of niobate hydrate particles including potassium niobate hydrate (KN-hydrate), sodium niobate hydrate (NN-hydrate), and potassium sodium niobate hydrate (KNN-hydrate) in the hydrothermal synthesis process have been investigated. X-ray study revealed that the main constituents of these particles were K<sub>8</sub>Nb<sub>6</sub>O<sub>19</sub>$\Cdot$10H<sub>2</sub>O, Na<sub>8</sub>Nb<sub>6</sub>O<sub>19</sub>$\Cdot$13H<sub>2</sub>O, and K<sub>4</sub>Na<sub>4</sub>Nb<sub>6</sub>O<sub>19</sub>$\Cdot$9H<sub>2</sub>O, respectively. The morphology of the KN- and KNN-hydrate particles showed a plate-like shape with aspect ratios (diameter/thickness) of 9.2--13 and 4.5--10, respectively, which were strongly affected by sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) surfactant. However, NN-hydrate showed a strip-like morphology and was not affected by SDBS quantity. Therefore, the surfactant type and its quantity play an important role in controlling the morphology of the niobate hydrate particles.
