The UV-irradiation of dimethyl 2,4- and 3,4-pyridinedicarboxylates in methanol in the presence of H<SUB>2</SUB>SO<SUB>4</SUB> under O<SUB>2</SUB> brings about methoxylation at the β- position of the pyridine ring, while under N<SUB>2</SUB> methoxylation occurs at the α-position.
