A new method of measuring acoustical transmission through the Eustachian tube while swallowing was evaluated by acoustic band noise sound pressure changes.In a preliminary experiment, pure tone was employed as a sound source. However, it was difficult to analize the sound pressure changes during swallowing because of fluctuations in the baseline (sound pressure level line). This experiment also showed that sound pressures, which occurred during Eustachian tube function, could be transmitted more effectively at low frequency sounds.However, when swallowing occurred without acoustic loads, noises due to the swallowing came from the pharynx, etc. and were recorded at a level of approximately 700-2000Hz. The power spectrum showed one or two peaks.We analized the sound pressure changes in relation to time and frequency by multiple recordings monitored through a 1/3 octave band pass filter. The noises of the sound source monitored by this method were represented as the highest frequency of noise levels, and at this level curves of sound pressure were related to the opening and closing of the tube during swallowing.Of course these acoustic changes were also observed at other frequencies, but they were considered to be the noise elements reflected by the nasal cavity and nasopharynx. Therefore, the consistent rate of tubal opening and closing accompanied by swallowing was studied in 35 randomly selected normal ears. Positive rates were noted in 77% at 8kHz and in 82% at 6kHz. The amplitude averaged approximately 14-15dB, and the duration of tubal opening averaged 300msec. There was no difference in duration or amplitude between 8kHz and 6kHz sound sources.
