The preliminary study on an attempt to remove hepatitis B surface antigen with double filtration plasmapheresis.

Excessive production of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) has been reported to inhibit HBsAg specific cytotoxic T cell activity which is considered to be responsible for the cessation of hepatitis B virus infection. So we attempt to decrease the concentration of HBsAg in the serum of the patients with chronic active hepatitis type B in order to make immunotherapy in HBV infection more effective. In this paper we reported the preliminary study on the effective removal rate of HBsAg by using Evaflux 4A filter in the double filtration plasmapheresis system. Evaflux 4A filter showed the selective and high rejection rate for Dane particle (almost 100%) and HBsAg (97%) compared with albumin (29%), IgG (40%), IgA (52%), and IgM (72%). So this Evaflux 4A filter in the double filtration plasmapheresis system could be applied for clinical use to reduce HBsAg in blood as a supportive method for immunotherapy.
