A case of primary biliary cirrhosis. - 4 years' treatment with 300mg/day ursodeoxycholic acid.

A 4-year treatment with 300mg/day ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) was evaluated in a 64 year-old woman with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). At the beginning of the study, liver histology revealed stage 1 of PBC. First, cholestyramine was administered. Pruritus was relieved but laboratory examinations were not affected. Then, UDCA 300mg/day in combination with cholestyramine was started 4 years ago. Total cholesterol (T. chol), alkaline phosphatase (Al-P) and glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) were improved but albumin declined gradually to below normal range. The second liver biopsy showed cirrhotic stage.<BR>UDCA apparently has choleretic effects but it remains unknown whether or not 300mg/day UDCA treatment has the potential to change the natural history of PBC.
