In major abdominal surgery, the restriction of oral nutrition and surgical trauma produce a marked loss of protein and, therefore, carbohydrate supply as an energic source by intravenous route is essential during this period. However, carbohydrate metabolism is impaired immediately after surgery. This is con-sidered to be due to the relative shortage of insulin action which reflects endocrine responses to surgical trauma. By estimating fluctuations of plasma glucose, free amino acids and insulin, in this study, the authors have mainly investigated the metabolic interrelationship between carbohydrate and amino acid during and after surgery, and some considerations regarding these conditions have been discussed.
