The HClO<SUB>4</SUB>-catalyzed H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>- and O<SUB>2</SUB>-oxidations of a dihyropyridine in acetonitrile were mechanistically investigated; the H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>-oxidation under nitrogen followed a heterolytic course to yield the corresponding pyridinium salt along with a monooxygenated product, while the O<SUB>2</SUB>-oxidation produced the pyridinium salt and H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> via a radical-chain pathway in which H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> is not only merely the product but also an initiator.
