Pharmacognostical Studies on Geranii Herba. : On the Morphology of the Pollen Grains

To identify the original plant of "Gennoshoko" in market, the pollen grains collected from twenty species of genus Geranium were subject to electron microscopic examination. Identification of each of the species belonging to genus Geranium was easily made based on the observations of the exterior configuration, namely dimension, germinal furrow length, number of clava per unit surface area and clava size of their pollen grains with electron microscope. The configuration of the pollen grains from "Gennoshoko" were the same as those of G. thunbergii and G. yesoense. The above facts showed that the original plant of "Gennoshoko" was G. thunbergii and G. yesoense. Close relation was recognized between the criteria for the classification of plant into sections in plant taxonomy and the configurations of the pollen grains of genus Geranium such as the maximum size of clavae and the number of clava per unit surface area. Although there were observed intraspecific variations to certain extent, no significant difference was noticed in the pollen configurations of G. thunbergii.
