Antimutagenic action of medicinal plants used in traditional Chinese medicine were investigated. Thirty-three kinds of Chinese medicinal plants, which, in the traditional Chinese medicinal science, are called the drugs of "fu zheng gu ben" (扶正固本), or the drugs having homeostasis-like effects, were chosen and were tested for their antimutagenic activity on benzo[a]pyrene mutagenicity using the Ames system. The aqueous extracts of eight kinds of plants, i.e. Paeonia lactiflora, Acanthopanax trifoliatus, Agrimonia pilosa, Kadsura coccinea, Rosa laevigata, Breynia fruticosa, Millettia sp., and Euscaphis japonica strongly inhibited the mutagenic activity of benzo[a]pyrene. These extracts were further fractionated into ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water fractions. The activity was found in the ethyl acetate fractions of Paeonia lactiflora, Euscaphis japonica and Breynia fruticosa, in the n-butanol fractions of Breynia fruticosa, Euscaphis japonica, Acanthopanax trifolatus, Millettia sp. and Paeonia lactiflora, and in the water fraction of Paeonia lactiflora.
