In order to predominantly multiply Bifidobacterium and maintain its population in the intestine, which is said to be good for human health, it has been attempted to simultaneously administer the sugars which are selectively utilized by the bacteria. Fructo-oligosaccharide is known to be a kind of sugar which meets the purpose. A saccharide fraction called GFx was obtained from Ophiopogon in 50% yield, by treating its water extract with active charcoal, celite and then with ethanol. GFx was tested for its effect on a number of clinically separated intestinal bacteria, in vitro. GFx, as well as kestose (GF_2), nystose (GF_3), β-D-fructofuranosyl nystose(GF_4), which had been isolated also from Ophiopogon, and neo-sugar P which is a commercially available fructo-oligosaccharide mixture were utilized by Bifidobacterium, but, they were not utilized by Lactobacillus, Enterococcus , Escherichia coli, Serratia marcescens, Proteus vulgaris. Therefore, it was confirmed that GFx was selectively utilized by Bifidobacterium. This suggested that the administration of GFx may be beneficient for the improvement of human intestinal flora.
