Ajoene, a garlic-derived sulfur-containing compound, showed antibacterial effect on Helicobacter pylori in Mongolian gerbils. H. pylori-infected Mongolian gerbils had been orally administered ajoene for four weeks. For detection of H. pylori, we checked urease activity of the homogenized stomach. Administration of ajoene effected a significant suppression of the urease activity. These results suggested that ajoene had antibacterial effect on H. pylori in Mongolian gerbils.ajoene
