Studies on the Cytotoxicity of Compounds from Fruits of Juglans mandshurica

The cytotoxicity of 26 compounds from the fruits of Juglans mandshurica was examined against three human cancer cell lines; Human myeloid leukemia HL-60 cells, human stomach KATO-III adenocarcinoma and human lung A_<549> adenocarcinoma. The growth inhibitiory activity of these compounds was estimated by the MTT assay. For comparison, the known cytotoxic substance, cisplatin, was used for the positive control. Among these compounds, almost all the naphthalenyl glucosides exhibited cytotoxicity against HL-60 cell whereas the a-tetralonyl glucosides and other aromatic compounds except gallic acid were inactive. These results suggested that the naphthalenyl glucosides maybe play a significant role in the cytotoxicity of this plant.
