The components of the essential oil from rootstock of Coptis chinensis were analysed by GC and GC-MS. The oil contained 52 components of which 77.30 % were aromatic components. The main constituents of the essential oil were found to be m-acetylanisole (47.41 %), 2-methyl-propanoic acid, 3-hydroxy-2,4,4-trimethylpentyl ester (5.29 %), 2-methyl-propanoic acid, 2,2dimethyl-1-(2-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)propyl ester (3.72 %) and phenol (2.08 %).
