Platelet Aggregatory Effects of Nasturtium officinale and Solanum torvum Extracts

Two Indonesian medicinal plants ( Nasturtium officinale (L.)R. Br. and Solarium torvum Sw.) were extracted with hot 50% ethanol or distilled water to study their platelet aggregating effects, comparing the effect of the platelet aggregation induced by ADP or collagen. The plants extracted with 50 % ethanol exhibited a more potent platelet aggregating effect than the aqueous extracts, examining the extent of formation of platelet aggregates according to size distribution with the use of a platelet aggregometer employing a laser-scattering method, which is more sensitive to the detection of small-sized platelet aggregate formations than the conventional OD or impedance methods. The results suggested that platelet aggregation activating constituents in both plants may be more ethanol soluble than water soluble.
