Antiplatelet Aggregating Activity of Extracts of Indonesian Medicinal Plants I

Eight Indonesian medicinal plants (Cassia alata L., Cyclea barbata Miers, Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv, Kaempferia galanga L., Nasturtium officinale (L.)R. Br., Phyllanthus niruri L., Solanum torvum Sw., and Sonchus arvenis L.) were extracted with 50% ethanol to study their inhibitory effects on the platelet aggregation induced by ADP or collagen, comparing the effect of adenosine as a positive control. All the extracts were found to possess the inhibitory effects to varied extents, among which Phyllanthus niruri exhibited the highest inhibitory effects on the platelet aggregations induced by both aggregating agents; however, the extracts of Nasturtium officinale and Solanum torvum were observed to have activating effects on platelet aggregation, resulting in the formation of small-sized platelet aggregates before adding aggregating agents. Furthermore, a study on the size distribution of the platelet aggregates showed that aggregates became smaller when the extracts of Phyllanthus niruri, Cassia alata, Imperata cylindrica, and Kaempferia galanga were added, suggesting the presence of inhibition of developing the small aggregates into the formation of the large aggregates and also the existence of some correlation between the inhibitory effects and aggregate sizes.
